How to Perform Wudu: Purification Before Salah

Wudu (ablution) is how Muslims wash specific parts of the body before salah and touching the Qur'an (according to mainstream fiqh). Without valid wudu - or ghusl when required - you cannot pray.

This guide walks through wudu step by step, what breaks wudu, and how wudu connects to prayer times on Salat Guide.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah does not accept prayer without purification." - Sahih Muslim

For full salah after wudu, see our guide: How to pray salah step by step.

Before You Start

CheckAction
WaterClean, pure, permissible to use
PlacePrivate bathroom or where you can wash comfortably
IntentionIn the heart - for wudu to pray or worship
Major impurity? If yes, ghusl first, not only wudu

Wudu Steps (Hanafi / Shafi'i Common Sequence)

  1. Intention (niyyah) in the heart.
  2. Bismillah (recommended before starting).
  3. Hands - wash both hands to the wrists, including between fingers (right then left is sunnah).
  4. Mouth - rinse three times (madmadah).
  5. Nose - sniff water in and blow out three times (istinshaq / istinthar).
  6. Face - wash from hairline to chin, ear to ear, three times.
  7. Arms - right arm to elbow three times, then left.
  8. Head - wipe with wet hands once (full head or partial per madhab).
  9. Ears - wipe with fingers using remaining moisture.
  10. Feet - wash to ankles, right then left, three times each.

After wudu, many Muslims recite the shahada dua and dua after wudu taught in the Sunnah.

What Breaks Wudu?

Common causes (learn your madhab for detail):

  • Anything exiting from the front or back passages (urine, stool, wind)
  • Deep sleep lying down
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Direct contact with private parts without barrier (per many scholars)
  • Bleeding in some schools (Hanafi: copious bleeding; others differ)

When unsure after a clear event, renew wudu. Light doubt without cause should not become waswas.

Wudu vs Ghusl

HowWash limbs as aboveFull body wash with intention
TimeFew minutesFew minutes with privacy

After ghusl, wudu is not required separately for salah according to mainstream view.

Tayammum (Dry Ablution)

If water is unavailable or harmful to use, Islam allows tayammum with clean earth/dust under strict conditions. Learn from a scholar - do not skip salah without knowing the rules.

Common Wudu Mistakes

  1. Rushing - each part deserves calm washing.
  2. Missing between fingers and toes where required.
  3. Wasting water - the Prophet ﷺ used little water yet was thorough.
  4. Praying with broken wudu because you "thought" you had it.
  5. Skipping wudu after sleep or bathroom without checking.

After Wudu: Pray on Time

Wudu is preparation. Salah is the goal. Check prayer times for your city - Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha - and pray in the window Allah ordained.

Conclusion

How to perform wudu is among the first skills every Muslim learns. Master it once, renew it whenever needed, and stand before Allah in purity.

Check prayer times after wudu so you never miss the prayer you prepared for.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between wudu and ghusl?

Wudu is minor ablution before salah. Ghusl is full-body purification required after major impurity (e.g. janabah, menstruation, post-natal bleeding).

  • Does wudu break if I sleep?

Deep sleep lying down typically breaks wudu according to mainstream fiqh. Light dozing in a chair may differ by school - ask a scholar if unsure.

  • Can I pray without wudu if I have no water?

If water is unavailable or harmful to use, tayammum (dry purification with clean earth) may apply. Learn the conditions from a qualified teacher.

  • Do I need to repeat wudu for each prayer?

No, as long as your wudu remains valid and you have not broken it, one wudu can cover multiple prayers.

  • Is saying Bismillah required for wudu?

Scholars differ on whether Bismillah is obligatory or recommended at the start. Many Muslims say it before washing hands.
