Isha Prayer: Time, Rakats & Can You Pray It After Midnight?

Isha is the fifth and final daily prayer. It begins when the red (or white, by some calculations) twilight disappears from the sky after Maghrib and continues until Fajr time begins. The best time to pray Isha is before midnight; praying after midnight is permitted but disliked; and it must be completed before Fajr.

Quick Answer

  • Starts: after red twilight disappears (approximately 60–90 mins after Maghrib)
  • Best time: before midnight
  • Permitted until: just before Fajr begins
  • Fard rakats: 4
  • Sunnah after: 2 (strongly recommended)
  • Witr: 3 rakats (wajib in Hanafi; sunnah mu'akkadah in others) — prayed last

Table of Contents

Allah says in the Qur'an (4:103): "Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times." Isha closes the day's five obligatory prayers — and opens the door to voluntary night worship.

When Does Isha Start and End?

Isha starts when shafaq (twilight) disappears from the western sky. Most timetables use red twilight (shafaq ahmar); some use white twilight (shafaq abyad), which makes Isha start slightly later.

Preferred timeBefore midnight (middle of the night)

Isha begins when Maghrib ends — roughly 60–90 minutes after sunset depending on your location and calculation method. Open prayer times for your city. Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr are listed separately so you can see the full night window.

High-latitude problem: In parts of the UK, Canada, and Scandinavia, Isha and Fajr can overlap in summer when twilight never fully disappears. Follow your local mosque or Islamic authority's fixed timetable rather than guessing.

The Prophet ﷺ sometimes delayed Isha when there was a valid reason, but he did not habitually push it to the last minutes before Fajr (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Isha Rakats — Including Witr

Isha fard has 4 rakats. The full recommended routine includes sunnah and witr.

TypeRakatsNotes
Sunnah before4Optional but rewarding
Fard4Obligatory for every adult Muslim
Sunnah after2Strongly emphasised (sunnah mu'akkadah)
Witr3 (or 1 in some schools)See witr prayer guide
Nafl2+Optional night prayers

Isha fard has 4 rakats. Unlike Fajr and Maghrib, Isha is prayed silently in the Hanafi madhab (recitation in the heart or quiet voice). Shafi, Maliki, and Hanbali schools may recite aloud in the first two rakats when praying in congregation — follow your madhab.

While travelling, Isha fard may be shortened to 2 rakats (qasr). See our prayer times while travelling guide for combining Maghrib and Isha on the road.

What Is Witr Prayer and Is It Compulsory?

Witr (odd-numbered prayer) is prayed after Isha, before Fajr. It is the closing prayer of the night.

MadhabRuling on witr
HanafiWajib (obligatory below fard level)
ShafiSunnah mu'akkadah (strongly recommended)
MalikiSunnah mu'akkadah
HanbaliSunnah mu'akkadah

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Make witr the last of your night prayers." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

Hanafi Muslims pray 3 rakats with Dua al-Qunoot in the third rakat before ruku. Shafi, Maliki, and Hanbali Muslims may pray 1 rakat minimum or longer odd numbers (3, 5, 7, etc.).

What if you miss witr? Hanafi Muslims should pray qada witr the next day before Dhuhr. Other madhabs treat witr as sunnah — make it up voluntarily but no sin for occasional omission. Full steps are in our dedicated witr prayer guide.

Dua al-Qunoot (brief reference)

In the third rakat of Hanafi witr, after reciting Al-Fatiha and a surah, say Allahu Akbar and recite Dua al-Qunoot before ruku:

Allahumma inna nasta'inuka wa nastaghfiruka…

If you do not know Qunoot yet, recite Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah… three times until you memorise the full dua.

Praying Isha Late at Night

You may pray Isha after midnight if you are within the window before Fajr. The Prophet ﷺ sometimes delayed Isha when there was a valid reason, but delaying habitually without need is disliked (makruh).

TimeRuling
Before midnightPreferred (mustahab)
After midnightPermitted but disliked without excuse — still valid
Last minutes before FajrValid but risky — avoid habitually
After Fajr beginsInvalid — pray qada as soon as possible

Practical guidance for night workers, students, and doctors:

  • Pray Isha as soon as your shift or study block allows — do not wait until exhaustion.
  • If you fear missing Fajr, pray Isha and witr before bed.
  • After midnight is valid but disliked without excuse; still better than missing the prayer entirely.

What time is too late for Isha? Any time before Fajr is technically valid, but scholars discourage habitually praying in the last hour before Fajr. Aim for before midnight when possible.

If you realise you have not prayed Isha and Fajr has already begun, you must pray qada (make-up) as soon as possible.

Isha and Tahajjud

After Isha, the next voluntary prayer is Tahajjud (night prayer) in the last third of the night. See our Tahajjud prayer guide for full details.

Can you pray Tahajjud right after Isha? Technically you can pray voluntary night rakats after Isha, but true Tahajjud requires sleeping first — then waking in the last third of the night. That is when the reward is greatest.

Best practice: Sleep after Isha, wake for Tahajjud in the last third of the night, then pray witr as the final prayer of the night. The formula for last third: (Fajr time − Maghrib time) ÷ 3 = one-third of the night.

If you will not wake for Tahajjud, pray witr before sleeping so you do not miss it. Hanafi Muslims who skip witr without excuse should make it up the next day before Dhuhr.

Isha While Travelling

Muslim travellers may shorten Isha fard from 4 to 2 rakats — this is qasr (shortening). Fajr and Maghrib are not shortened.

SituationHanafiShafi / Maliki / Hanbali
Qasr Isha2 fard rakats2 fard rakats
Combine Maghrib + IshaNot in regular travelPermitted when travelling

Minimum travel distance for qasr varies by madhab (Hanafi: roughly 77.5 km). Pray witr even when shortening Isha. Read our prayer times while travelling guide for combining rules on planes and long drives.
