Witr Prayer: How Many Rakats, When to Pray & Is It Compulsory?

Witr is a prayer prayed after the Isha fard, before Fajr begins. In the Hanafi madhab, witr is wajib (obligatory but below fard level) — skipping it without excuse is sinful. In Shafi, Maliki, and Hanbali madhabs, it is a sunnah mu'akkadah — strongly recommended but not obligatory. Every Muslim should aim to pray witr every night.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Make witr the last of your night prayers." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

Witr at a glance

  • Position: After Isha fard and sunnah — last prayer of the night
  • Hanafi: 3 rakats, wajib — qada if missed
  • Shafi / Maliki / Hanbali: Minimum 1 rakat, sunnah mu'akkadah
  • Best time: Last third of night — or before sleep if you fear missing it
  • Ends: Before Fajr begins

What Is Witr Prayer?

Witr (Arabic: odd-numbered) means ending your night worship on an unpaired rakat. It is not a sixth fard prayer like Fajr or Isha — it is the capstone of everything you pray after Isha.

Witr sits at the end of the night's worship chain: Isha fardIsha sunnah → optional Tahajjudwitr last. The odd number is deliberate — the Prophet ﷺ consistently prayed witr and commanded the ummah never to abandon it.

Allah describes the righteous as those who "in the hours of the night they sleep not, and at the ends of the night they seek forgiveness" (Qur'an 51:17–18). Witr belongs to that spirit of night devotion.

Is Witr Compulsory? The Four Madhab Positions

MadhabRuling on Witr
HanafiWajib — obligatory below fard; qada required if missed without excuse
ShafiSunnah mu'akkadah — strongly emphasised
MalikiSunnah mu'akkadah
HanbaliSunnah mu'akkadah

All four schools agree the Prophet ﷺ never abandoned witr. Hanafi scholars classify it as wajib because of persistent prophetic practice and companion consensus. Other schools emphasise it as sunnah mu'akkadah — but practically, every Muslim should treat witr as non-negotiable.

If you are Hanafi and skipped witr without a valid excuse, you carry a debt of qada. If you follow another madhab, you have no obligatory make-up — but abandoning witr habitually still distances you from the Sunnah.

How Many Rakats Is Witr?

MethodRakatsSchools
Three rakats, one salaam3Hanafi (most common)
One rakat1Shafi, Maliki, Hanbali minimum
Longer odd sets3, 5, 7, 9, 11Permitted in Shafi/Maliki/Hanbali

Hanafi witr is 3 rakats with one salaam at the end — not three separate prayers with three salams. You pray two full rakats, sit briefly, stand for the third, then complete one final salaam.

The 3-rakat vs 1-rakat question: Hanafis always pray 3. Shafi/Maliki/Hanbali Muslims may pray 1 rakat minimum and make salaam, or build longer odd-numbered sets (5, 7, etc.) following prophetic flexibility. Neither approach is "more correct" — follow your madhab and local teaching.

The Prophet ﷺ prayed witr in varying odd counts on different nights (reported in several narrations). Consistency matters more than chasing the highest number.

How to Pray Witr Step by Step (Hanafi Method)

  1. Make wudu — Complete ablution. See how to perform wudu.
  2. Face Qibla — Toward Makkah. See Qibla direction guide.
  3. Niyyah — In your heart, intend 3 witr rakats for tonight.
  4. First 2 rakats — Recite Surah Al-Fatiha and another surah in each; bow (ruku) and prostrate (sujood) as in any fard prayer.
  5. Brief tashahud — Sit briefly after the second rakat (Hanafi-specific sitting before the third).
  6. Third rakat — Stand, recite Al-Fatiha and a surah.
  7. Dua al-Qunoot — Before ruku in the third rakat, say Allahu Akbar, raise hands, and recite Dua al-Qunoot (full text below).
  8. Complete third rakat — Ruku, two sujoods, full tashahud, and one salaam to finish.

Shafi method note: In the Shafi school, Qunoot is often recited after ruku in the final rakat of witr (and sometimes in Fajr). Follow your teacher's instruction for hand position and wording.

Dua al-Qunoot — Full Text

Dua al-Qunoot (the standing supplication) is recited in the third rakat of Hanafi witr before ruku.

English translation

"O Allah, we seek Your help and ask Your forgiveness, and we believe in You and rely upon You, and we praise You in the best way and we thank You and we are not ungrateful to You, and we forsake and turn away from the one who disobeys You. O Allah, You alone we worship, and to You we pray and prostrate, and to You we strive and hasten. We hope for Your mercy and we fear Your punishment — indeed Your punishment will reach the disbelievers. O Allah, forgive me and my parents and the believers on the Day the account is established."

When is Qunoot recited? In Hanafi witr: before ruku in the 3rd rakat. In Shafi witr: typically after ruku.

What if you do not know Qunoot yet? Recite Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina 'adhaban-nar (Qur'an 2:201) three times — a valid beginner substitute taught in Hanafi fiqh. Memorise the full Qunoot gradually; do not skip witr because you are still learning.

When to Pray Witr

SituationRecommendation
DefaultAfter Isha fard and 2 sunnah
You will wake for TahajjudDelay witr until after Tahajjud
You fear sleeping through FajrPray witr before sleeping
Best rewardLast third of the night, just before Fajr

Witr ends when Fajr begins. Check Fajr time on your city's timetable and finish witr before the Adhan.

Relationship with Tahajjud: The Prophet ﷺ said to make witr the last night prayer. If you plan to wake for Tahajjud, pray Tahajjud first, then witr. If you are unsure you will wake, pray witr after Isha so you do not miss it entirely.

During Ramadan, mosques often pray Tarawih then witr in congregation. If you pray at home after Tarawih, witr still must end before Fajr — see Ramadan Sehri and Iftar times.

What If You Miss Witr?

MadhabIf witr was missed
HanafiPray qada witr the next day before Dhuhr
Shafi / Maliki / HanbaliNo obligatory qada — make it up as nafl when you remember

Hanafi qada witr is prayed like regular witr (3 rakats, Qunoot in 3rd) but with intention of make-up. Pray it in the forbidden prayer times window is not allowed — so complete qada witr after sunrise and before Dhuhr zawal.

If you prayed witr, then woke and prayed Tahajjud, most scholars say you do not repeat witr — it already closed the night. The ideal is to delay witr when Tahajjud is likely; the fallback is Tahajjud without repeating witr.

Witr while travelling: Hanafi travellers still pray witr even when shortening Isha to 2 fard rakats. Combine Maghrib and Isha when permitted (Shafi/Maliki/Hanbali), complete shortened Isha, then pray witr before Fajr. See prayer times while travelling.

FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

Is witr prayer fard or sunnah?

Witr is wajib in Hanafi fiqh and sunnah mu'akkadah in Shafi, Maliki, and Hanbali fiqh. All schools strongly emphasise never abandoning it.

Can I pray just 1 rakat for witr?

Yes in Shafi, Maliki, and Hanbali schools. Hanafi Muslims pray 3 rakats with one salaam at the end.

What if I forget Dua al-Qunoot in witr?

If you reached ruku without Qunoot, your witr is still valid in Hanafi fiqh — you missed a recommended act, not a pillar. Learn Qunoot for future nights.

Can witr be prayed before Isha?

No — witr is prayed after Isha. It is the closing prayer of the night, not a replacement for Isha.

Is witr prayer compulsory in Hanafi madhab?

Yes — Hanafi scholars classify witr as wajib. Miss it without excuse and you should pray qada before Dhuhr the next day.

What time does witr prayer end?

Witr ends when Fajr begins. Complete witr before the Fajr Adhan on your timetable.

Can I pray Tahajjud after witr?

Ideally, pray Tahajjud first, then witr last. If you already prayed witr and later woke for Tahajjud, you may pray Tahajjud without repeating witr in most views.

Do I need to repeat witr if I pray Tahajjud after it?

Generally no — witr should be last, so delay witr if you plan to pray Tahajjud. If witr was already prayed, Tahajjud alone is fine without repeating witr.

Conclusion

Witr prayer is the odd-numbered seal on your night — wajib for Hanafis, sunnah mu'akkadah for others, and beloved to the Prophet ﷺ for every Muslim. Learn the rakats for your madhab, memorise Qunoot gradually, and never let Fajr begin without completing Isha and witr.
